1877
November 19th: William HASSELL
Exeter
On 8 October, Hassell, a Barnstable butcher returned home drunk and stabbed his wife three times with a pig-knife while she breast fed their baby. They had repeatedly quarrelled and he had become dismayed at their unhappy life. He refused legal aid and pleaded guilty at his trial, although a petition for a reprieve was organised on the strength that he was drunk when he committed the crime. Hassell walked to the scaffold with a firm step but cried bitterly before he was hanged by Marwood.
